Crawfordsville faced another stiff challenge Monday evening in the form of the Class A no. 7, Lafayette Central Catholic (6-3).

The Knights proved their rank, scoring six first-half goals on the way to a 10-1 victory.

“Our last four games have been really tough and will only help us going forward.” Athenian head coach Laurie Vellner said of games against Terre Haute North, Lebanon, Danville and Central Catholic. “I feel that we’ve progressed as a team every single game, and we’re doing better at the things we’re working on in practice.”

Addie Laskowski scored the only Athenian goal, her third of the season, when she capitalized on a mistake in the Central Catholic zone and scored as time wound down in the first half.

“Addie created that goal because of her hustle.” Vellner said. “It was a confidence booster for us going into halftime.”

Vellner also praised her freshman goalie Sierra Hutchison, who finished with 15 saves.

“She was stellar in goal.” she said. “Even though they scored 10 goals, it could’ve been much worse.”

“She made some great breakaway saves.” “She gets better every single game, including the second half tonight.”

Laskowski recorded four shots, while Isabelle Rich, Bethany Young and Maddie Hudson also had shots for Crawfordsville.

The Athenians (2-7, 0-3 SAC) will host Sheridan Thursday.

“It will be a nice relief going into some winnable games.” Vellner added. “It should build some confidence heading into the postseason.”
