Crawfordsville (1-1) head coach Laurie Vellner, in her first season, picked up the first win of her career Thursday night.

The Lady Athenians rode on the backs of veteran leadership and outstanding offense to beat Delphi 2-0 at home.

“I am really excited for the girls.” Vellner said. “We finally proved to ourselves that we can win and that confidence will help us later on—the girls have worked hard this season and it’s exciting to see it starting to pay off.

The Lady Athenians were great on offense. Great passing and hustle helped to set up a lot of open shots.

“We played great, smart soccer on offense today. Our through balls were great and our passes were crisp.” Vellner said. “We have some things to work on but I was pleased with our offense tonight.”

Crawfordsville recorded eleven shots on goal in the game with seven of them coming in the first half. Senior Maddie Hudson led the way for the Athenians on offense, scoring both of Crawfordsville’s goals.

“Maddie’s second goal was beautiful. It was from the 20 (yard-line) and it was great to show the girls that we don’t have to force the ball in deep to score.” Vellner commented.

“I was really happy that every girl got the opportunity to play today. The team chemistry is great this year and the girls getting time to play together will definitely help them bond even more.”

Freshman Sierra Hutchison was at goalie for the Lady Athenians. Hutchison saved every ball that came her way to come away with the shutout.

“Sierra was great for us in goal. I was definitely happy with her play.” Vellner said.

The Athenians will be back in action on Monday Aug. 22 against Greencastle.
