Danville proved why they are one of the favorites to win the Sagamore Conference in volleyball as they defeated the Athenians in straight sets 25-15, 25-15, 25-13.

“I thought we competed very well against a good team tonight.” Athenian head coach Kelly Johnson said. “They had a lot of size, and their middle hitters are strong.”

Danville (21-7, 4-0 SAC) jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead in the third set. The Athenians trailed just 9-5, before Danville ran off five of the next six to take a 15-6 lead. They would score the last five points of the match for the final margin.

“We’re still getting better and making improvements.” she continued. “Danville’s a good team, and we played with some fight and fire tonight which was good to see.”

Caroline Schueren led the Athenians with seven assists, thee kills and a block. Madison Wendelin and Zoe Walbert each had five kills while Emilea Pursell had six assists and Fabiola Castro five digs.

The Athenians are back in action Tuesday when they travel to Frankfort in a Sagamore Conference showdown.
