CRAWFORDSVILLE –Crawfordsville looked to showcase their new team after the addition of head coach Larry Getts as they played host to Sheridan Friday during their first exhibition game of the season.

“We had a lot of good things happen today,” said senior quarterback Trent Johnson, “it was good to go out and play someone other than ourselves. We did a lot of things right but also found things we need to improve on”

The scrimmage was split up into five segments with each segment representing a different facet of a game. The Athenian players showed some nerves during the first segment as the Blackhawks scored twice but held strong in the next three varsity segments defensively.

On offense, the Athenians drove the ball down the field efficiently on several occasions but only managed to score once. That came on a 46-yard quarterback scramble by sophomore Cameron Saunders.

Senior LaHarren Saulsberry ran the ball well for the Athenians. LaHarren carried the ball 12 times for 63 yards.

“I never doubted the kids’ effort tonight. They played hard the whole game and I am proud of them for that,” said Coach Getts.

The Athenians will travel to Greencastle on Aug. 19 to open their season against the Tigers. Their home opener is slated for Aug. 26 when they welcome West Vigo.
