Reigning Player of The Year Dane Baldwin has looked good again this season.
NEW MARKET-Crawfordsville's tennis team got a leg up in the Sagamore Athletic Conference with a 4-1 win over Southmont Thursday.

"We came out with a lot of focus and energy," Crawfordsville head coach Michael Demeter said. "We talked a lot about being mentally tough and coming out knowing what to expect. We knew it was going to be a dogfight against Southmont. We discussed coming out for the first few points with confidence."

The Athenians got quick wins from Dane Baldwin at No. 1 singles and the No. 1 doubles pair of Tanner Laughlin and Cameron Douglas to take a 2-0 lead.

Just before Southmont's Nathan Truncone won at No. 2 singles, Crawfordsville clinched the match with Trey Barton and Reeve Hawkins winning in two sets.

Juan Huesca battled back after the dropping the first set for the second straight night to win for the Athenians at No. 3 singles and make the final 4-1.

"Starting out 1-0 in the conference sets the tone and hopefully gives the guys the feeling that we can't be beat . . . we're playing to win . . . not playing for second," Demeter said.

Crawfordsville (5-1, 1-0 SAC) will play host to the eight-team Macy Invitational this weekend. Joining Crawfordsville at the invitational will be: Terre Haute North, Lake Central, Edgewood, Greencastle, Rensselaer, Lowell and Washington. Southmont (6-4, 1-1 SAC) will play host to South Putnam Monday.
