VEEDERSBURG-North Montgomery and Crawfordsville kicked off their cross country season with a trip to Fountain Central for their annual Grand Prix. The Athenian boys had the best finish of the day, taking sixth place. The Athenian girls, Maddie Hurt and Amy Hutchison, competed as individuals. The North Montgomery girls were in the mix with a seventh-place finish. The Charger boys were twelfth.

Greencastle won the girls meet, just ahead of Western 57-61. Western got them in the boys meet, winning 51-72.

On the boys' side, Crawfordsville junior Manuel Arroyo opened the season with a ninth-place finish in 18:34. Teammates Davis Thompson (13, 18:48) and Nathan Pryor (22, 19:37) were also near the front.

North Montgomery's top boy was Michael Munro in 41st (20:29). Brandon Alenduff was just behind in 44th (20:39).

Hana Heide was the top finisher for the girls. She took 14th for North Montgomery in a time of 23:36. Her twin sister, Haley, was in ninth with 500 meters left when she went down with a cramp and was unable to finish. Courtney Clark (19, 24:02) and Maddison Pinkard (21, 24:14) also had nice races.

For Crawfordsville, Maddie Hurt had the best performance with a finish of with a run of 24:11.

North Montgomery will act as host for an Invitational Thursday. Crawfordsville will travel to North Putnam for a three-way meet with Tri-West Tuesday.





Tough tests for Mounties

BLOOMINGTON-The Southmont cross country team saw some of the best runners in the state Saturday at the Bloomington Early Bird meet. The Mounties had just four boys and two girls tally results, so they did not get team scores. Bloomington North edged Bloomington South in the boys meet. Bloomington South returned the favor on the girls' side.

For Southmont, Brooks Long was the top finisher. He was 35th in a time of 18:27. Ross Lipencott took 55th in 19:32.

For the girls, Kelsey Dugger was 88th in 26:05.

Southmont is back in action Tuesday with a trip to Harrison.
