GREENCASTLE-Maddy Hurt was fast Saturday. Faster than she's been all season. The hard work is paying off.

Hurt, competing for the Crawfordsville cross country team at the Greencastle Tiger Cub Invitational, ran her best time of the season (20:07) and finished second overall. She was only behind Alli Workman, a state qualifier last year.

Hurt shaved nearly a minute off her best time to set a new fastest time for girls in the county this year. Her previous best was 21:00.

And Hurt's just a freshman. And the fastest freshman at the event. The Athenians did not take a team score for the girls. Their only other runner, Amy Hutchison, finished in 31:13.

On the boys' side, The Athenians were fifth as a team. Davis Thompson, their top runner, was out with an injury. Nathan Pryor stepped up and ran a 16:59, the fastest he's been all year and the second fastest time from a boy in the county this year. It was good for an eighth place finish.

The Athenians will now turn their attention to the Sagamore Athletic Conference race on Saturday at Southmont.
