Crawfordsville held its Athenian Invitational wrestling tournament Saturday. The team finished 7th overall with a score of 123.00. West Lafayette finished first in the tournament, scoring 218.50.

The Athenians had two weight class champions. Skylar Crum won at 120 pounds, and Robert Manns emerged victorious at 182 pounds.

Crum won his first match via forfeit. He came out of his second match victorious with a technical fall. In the finals, Crum defeated Quentin Johnston of Seeger by way of major decision, 11-0.

Crawfordsville Head Wrestling Coach Chris Ervin was impressed by Crum's performance.

"Skylar Crum is doing an outstanding job for a freshman. He's wrestled for a long time and is a great competitor. He's not intimidated by older guys," Ervin said.

In the 182 pound weight class, Manns secured a win in his first match by technical fall. His second match ended with a fall 52 into the first period. The final round ended with Manns named champion over Andrew Gary of West Lafayette by technical fall.

Mitchell Rogers of Crawfordsville placed second in his weight class of 106 pounds. After a forfeit, he went on to secure his second victory defeating Keaton Boswell of Greencastle 1-0. In the finals, Rogers was edged out by West Lafayette's Charlie Randall.

Crawfordsville also had two athletes claim 3rd place, Tyler Bilyeu in the 138 pound class and Nathan Bean in the 285 pound class.

"I thought we could have had five or six in the finals. In that semifinal round we were kind of flat and didn't wrestle really well. We had a few No. 2 seeds knocked off. We won most of our matches in the placement round," Ervin said.

After the tournament, Ervin was pleased with the development of the team. "Overall, I think the kids made some progress," he said. "Having so many young kids, that helped them. By the end of the day they were understanding how to get prepared for the next round. I'm hoping that will be an advantage going into conference next week."

Crawfordsville will make up a dual at Fountain Central on Wednesday night. The junior varsity will wrestle the same night at the JV Sagamore Athletic Conference tournament at Lebanon.
