CLINTON-The American Legion Byron Cox Post 72 baseball team recovered from a loss Saturday to win the Clinton tournament. Post 72 lost to Clinton in the second game of the tournament Saturday, 7-3, but they bounce back to beat Greene County (18-3), Lafayette (15-6) and avenge their loss to Clinton to win the championship 9-6.

In the first 7-3 loss against Clinton, the team traded runs in the first before Clinton took the lead for good in the second. Brantley Fortner had two RBIs for Post 72.

In their second game Saturday Post 72 used a 10-run fourth inning to beat Greene County, 18-3. They scored in the big fourth thanks to an RBI-single from Cole Snyder, an error, an RBI single from Chase Mahoy, a passed ball, a two-run single by Garrett Phelps, a wild pitch, a groundout by Bryce Fortner and another single from Mahoy.

Post 72 started Sunday's single elimination tournament off with a 15-6 win over Lafayette. They scored six runs in the seventh to put the game away. Tyler DePugh homered on his way to five RBIs on three hits. Connor Smith tallied the final nine outs to put things away. Mitch Rice had a two-run single and Mitch Dehne had an RBI single.

Rice helped to avenge the loss he took on the mound Saturday with three hits in Sunday's championship win, 9-6 over Clinton. He had a single and two triples. Michael Herrmann took the win for Post 72.

Post 72 jumped out to a big lead early on with a seven-run second. They scored on an RBI double by Jake Haste, two sacrifice flies, a single from Herrmann and triples from Brantley Fortner and Rice.

Post 72 (20-5) will travel to Lafayette Tuesday before a long home stand.
