  • Bonwell conference medalist
    Monday, September 14, 2015 4:01 PM

What does it take to win a conference meet? 86 strokes and a heck of a game.

Kennedy Bonwell’s clubs were on fire Saturday. Stroke after stroke left her at the lowest score of all eight teams along with the medal.

Lebanon’s Allison Goodwin fell three strokes behind Bonwell at an 89. However, Lebanon’s team got their revenge from the last time North and Lebanon saw each other. The Tigers took the trophy at a low score of 362, 26 strokes ahead of North.

“Obviously we wanted to win and that didn’t happen,” Coach Cooper Tarter said. “I was very proud of how they played but now we know what we have to work on for sectionals.”

Joining Heather Ruby on the Montgomery County All-County Girls Golf team are three Chargers and two Athenians.

Kennedy Bonwell, Abbey Woodard and Megan Douglas represent North Montgomery on the All-County team.

Bonwell, a Golfer of the Year candidate, was second at the Montgomery County meet behind Ruby, she shot a county-best 96 at the Sagamore Athletic Conference meet and, along with Woodard and Douglas, shot an 88 at the sectional to help North Montgomery advance as a team.

The 88 for Woodard at the sectional was a personal best for her. She also made second team All-Conference. Douglas, a freshman, was on the All-Conference team by virtue of finishing fourth at the conference meet with a 93.

Regina Go and Shania Harrison are the Athenians garnering honors.

  • Golf season wraps up
    Sunday, September 28, 2014 7:23 PM
GREENWOOD-The girls' golf season has come to an end for teams from Montgomery County and the Sagamore Athletic Conference. North Montgomery, Lebanon and Southmont's Heather Ruby competed at the Roncalli Regional Saturday, held at Smock Golf Course.

Carmel won the event with a score of 312. North Montgomery was 16th with a team score of 403. Lebanon was 12th at 366.

Ruby finished the day shooting a 90.

The Chargers were led by Kennedy Bonwell's 89. The magic of three 88s that they had at the sectional was not to be had this week. Megan Douglas was the only other Charger to stay under 100 with her 94.

  • Chargers, Ruby advance
    Sunday, September 21, 2014 5:37 PM
It was the performance of a lifetime. And for it, they'll play another week.

The North Montgomery girls' golf team shot the best round they've every shot at the Crawfordsville sectional and advanced with a third-place finish. The round of 365 was better than the previous best (set in 2012) by one stroke. The Chargers tied Lebanon for second place with the score and the Tigers won the fifth-golfer tie breaker.

Zionsville won the event with a team score of 332. Southmont was fourth at 407 and Crawfordsville was seventh at 474.

The Chargers got 88s from their top three golfers: Kennedy Bonwell, Abbey Woodard and Megan Douglas.

"We didn't really have a number in mind. We focused on the mental side. We wanted to focus on hitting a good shot, one shot at a time. Focus on your gameplan for that shot and execute it," North Montgomery head coach Mark Shadiow said. "Smock is a lot longer than this course. It's a different layout, different type of course. We'll work on our long approach shots and putting on the bigger greens."

  • North wins county golf
    Wednesday, September 17, 2014 7:00 PM
North Montgomery won the Montgomery County golf championship Wednesday night. They edged Southmont by just a stroke, 206-207. Crawfordsville shot a 235. Heather Ruby was the medalist for Southmont with a 43.

"We didn't play well tonight. We still had too many big numbers on several holes and struggled with the large greens," North Montgomery head coach Mark Shadiow said. "Hopefully we can put in the hard work the next couple of nights that will be necessary to get some better scores at the sectional Saturday. Winning the county title is always a goal of ours, so we are definitely happy to get away with a win over two teams that played tough tonight."

  • Chargers 2nd at SAC

Temperatures were lower than they have been and scores were higher.

That was the story of the Sagamore Athletic Conference girls' golf meet on Saturday at the Crawfordsville Country Club.

After a long day of battling the conditions and the course, Lebanon went home as the winner thanks to a low round of 354. North Montgomery was second at 411. Southmont took fourth with a team score of 430 and Crawfordsville rounded out the county teams with a 465 for sixth place.

"We'll take second for sure. We knew Lebanon was going to be tough to beat. Megan (Douglas) played really well. She had 10 5s in a row," Charger mentor Mark Shadiow said. "We were hoping our scores would be a little lower than that. We were hoping we would be in the 300s. Before the sectional we need to eliminate our huge numbers. Seems like every girl has two or three just really big numbers. We have to minimize the damage."

DARLINGTON-North Montgomery got a warm up for the conference meet with a triangle affair Thursday night. The Chargers beat Western Boone (199) and Danville (222) with their score of 197.

Abbey Woodard was the medalist with a 43. Teammate Kennedy Bonwell was right behind her with a 49 and Megan Douglas stayed low with a 49.

"We didn't bring our best stuff tonight. But it was good experience for the girls to play in the cold since we are supposed to have similar temperatures for conference on Saturday," head coach Mark Shadiow said. "I think the girls played better than their scores indicated tonight. We struggled a bit on the greens but seemed to be hitting the ball pretty well overall."

North Montgomery is now 7-5 on the year and is 4-1 against Sagamore Athletic Conference opponents.

WEST LAFAYETTE-North Montgomery's girls' golf team made the trek to West Lafayette and lost 220-240 in tough conditions.

The Chargers were led officially by Megan Douglas with a 53. Abbey Woodard carded a 57 and Kristen Glass shot a 53. Kennedy Bonwell shot a 52, but her score was ruled ineligible because of a discrepancy with the scorecard.

"The course was playing tough after all the rain and both teams struggled as a results," head coach Mark Shadiow said. "We played very inconsistently tonight. The girls seemed to follow up a good hole with a bad hole. Hopefully we can bounce back as we head into the weekend of the conference tournament."

Prior to the Sagamore Athletic Conference tournament, the Chargers will play host to Danville and Western Boone on Thursday.
