All-county girls swim team determined
Tuesday, March 17, 2015 4:47 PM
With winter sports over and spring sports on the way, it is once again time to determine the county's ultimate swim team.
All of the county coaches were given the opportunity to nominate any potential candidates.
Here is what they determined:
Representing Crawfordsville are Katelyn Dixon, Kaylee McCandless, Zoe Harp and Jayde Miller. Dixon won the 200-yard Individual Medley at the county championships in December with a time of 2:32.65.
McCandless took second in the 50-yard Free with a time of 28.4 at the county meet, coming in less than a second back from first. Harp placed second as well in the 500-yard Free with a time of 6:34.51. Miller earned the highest score for the Athenians as a diver at the county meet with a score of 174.45.
For North Montgomery, representatives are Ashlynn Bennett, Lillia Mitchell, Lauren Odle and Anna Cotrell.

Diving Charger receives top honors
Tuesday, March 17, 2015 4:35 PM
North Montgomery senior Ashlynn Bennett is this year's official Montgomery County Diver of the Year.
Each of the county coaches nominated who they thought the best potential candidates were for the honor. Bennett came out on top of a narrow margin due to ample local talent.
Though a bright future awaits, Bennett took a moment to reflect on her time at North Montgomery.
"It's definitely been a learning experience, but I've enjoyed meeting a bunch of new friends and doing it at the same time with my old friends," Bennett said. "I want to thank my coaches for putting up with me for seven years and never giving up or putting too much pressure on me."
John Walker is the head coach for the Charger girls. He said it has been a privilege to watch Bennett grow but gives all of the coaching credit to diving coach Alvin O'Neil.
"He worked closely with Bennett for four years," Walker said. "This year he got a new job and had to quit, but the conditions of his job changed and he was able to come back. That was perfect because we love our coach - he's been spectacular for North.

Waves settle; legacy remains
Wednesday, March 11, 2015 8:05 PM
LINDEN - With basketball grabbing most of the area's headlines, it may be easy for one to overlook an accomplished high school swimmer.
Not in Montgomery County.
The 2015 Swimmer of the Year award goes to North Montgomery's Javan Barton, a senior and Academic All-American who plans to attend Indiana University this fall.
When asked to summarize his season and what it meant to him, Barton began his response with "oh boy."
"I was just really proud to be part of such a great team, we accomplished a lot" Barton said. "It's definitely been a bitter-sweet experience, now that it's my last year, but I think it was a great run and I'm really happy with the way it turned out."
