Hello world!
Boy did the winter season end all in a bunch! The boys basketball teams are traditionally the last winter sport to wrap up and it was a toss up how the sectionals would go. Down at South Putnam, Southmont ran into a red-hot buzzsaw of a Cloverdale team that went on to win the sectional and is primed for a run deep into the tournament.
North Montgomery was on the cusp of knocking off Lebanon in the Class 3A sectional but the Tigers prevailed in overtime. Also down at Greencastle, Crawfordsville ran into the best of No. 9 Tri-West. The Bruins went on to beat the Tigers and are primed for a noon meetup on Saturday with fellow Sagamore Athletic Conference mate Danville. The regional is also at Greencastle. The winner of the all-SAC semifinal will meet either Northview or Indy Attucks in the regional final at 8 p.m.
I really thought both Crawfordsville and Southmont could make a run at the sectional titles. Southmont stumbled down the stretch, but they had actually been playing pretty well heading into the postseason. Cloverdale’s a really good team and they’re even better when Cooper Neese (a Butler recruit) scores more than 30 and isn’t the team’s leading scorer.
Tri-West is a beast of a squad, too. The Bruins graduated just one kid from the team that made it to the semi state a season ago. Look for Tri-West to make another run this year. When they find the same page and have harmony among the entire club, look out.

Some of the less-spectator-friendly sports had winter athletes with great success this season. Caleb Whicker went down to Indy for the state diving finals and brought home a top-10 finish with seventh at state. One lone gymnast, North Montgomery’s Rhi Harpel, made the regional from the county. She had a solid finish, taking 16th at a very strong field.

As the spring season starts to roll in, we’ll be heading back outdoors. It’s this time of year that fans are just about sick of the hard bleachers and artificial lights that come with spending the winter indoors. We might not be out of the woods with weather just yet, but before we know it, the lawn chairs will be set up and we’ll be enjoying spring sports under beautiful sunshine. Ahh, it can’t come soon enough.
I’ll see ya out there!
