NEW MARKET - The game came down to the final shot.

Southmont (5-14) defeated Greencastle (11-9) 43-42 in overtime on a Cam Chadd 3-point basket as time expired.

"We were looking for a lob to (Kaleb) Swick," Chadd said. "I was the second option."

The Mountie freshman caught the ball with 2.5 seconds remaining in overtime.

"It felt right," he said. "I knew it was going in right when it left my hand."

Southmont coach Jon Sparks said that Chadd executed the final play with good composure.

"With 2.5 seconds it's real easy to rush that shot," he said. "He was patient and executed."

Chadd finished with 17 points on 5-of-11 shooting. He scored all six Mountie points in the overtime. Swick and Jarrett Todd each finished with eight points. Chadd and Swick each added six rebounds.

Southmont controlled the pace of game throughout. After jumping out to a 15-8 lead after the first quarter the Mounties slowed the game down as they moved the ball around the Tiger Cub 2-3 zone.

"I thought our team executed our game plan very well," Sparks said.

He said that while they shot the ball well, they were taking good shots.

"On defense we knew we wanted to hold them under 48 points," he said.

Sparks said that holding Greencastle under 48 points gave his team their best chance to win. With the victory the Mounties ended a 10-game losing streak.

"We have been looking for improvement," Sparks said. "Sometimes wins can be elusive. It can come down to who you are playing and when. We knew we had to trust the process."

Southmont, winless in six conference games, takes on Sagamore Athletic Conference foe Frankfort (8-13, 3-3 SAC) tonight for Senior Night. The Hot Dogs fell to Tipton 58-34 Friday. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m. in New Market.
