The pairings for the IHSAA girls' basketball sectionals were released on Sunday and Montgomery County teams found themselves with varying levels of difficulties in their sectional openers.

In Class 2A sectional 38, Southmont (4-16) will travel to Fountain Central on Feb. 6 to kick off their postseason with Riverton Parke (13-9). The Mounties are the defending sectional champions, but lost nearly all their scoring from that squad.

"I think overall we're pretty pleased," Southmont head coach Susan McVay said. "For us, having played Riverton Parke and played them pretty well after the start, that gives us an opportunity to look at what we didn't do so well the first time around.

The first time the squads met this season, at Riverton Parke, the Panthers pulled off a 60-52 win over the Mounties. The winner of the first-round matchup will play South Vermillion (6-13) on Feb. 13.

"We know that we can play with them," McVay said.

Seeger (15-6) and Fountain Central (17-2) will meet on Feb. 6 to start the tournament. The winner gets Clinton Central (4-16) in the semifinals.

"It's great that they play each other. Fountain Central are the favorites and Seeger is the favorite behind them and it's OK with me if they knock each other out," McVay said.

The Mounties were 0-3 against sectional opponents this year. They did not play South Vermillion or Clinton Central.

In Class 3A, Crawfordsville and North Montgomery will compete at sectional 25 at Lebanon and the draw couldn't have been worse for the Athenians.

Crawfordsville (11-9) is tasked with Class 3A No. 5 Lebanon (20-2) on Feb. 13. The Tigers have won three of the last four sectionals, but were defeated by Western Boone last season. Lebanon defeated Crawfordsville earlier this season 85-62 and the Tigers have not lost to a 3A school this season. The Athenians are 2-3 against sectional opponents this season, with both wins coming over North Montgomery. The winner of this matchup will get a spot in the finals.

North Montgomery (3-16) also has an automatic spot in the semifinals of the five-team field. The Chargers will play the winner of Frankfort (11-10) and Western Boone (12-9). The Chargers are 0-5 against sectional opponents and 0-9 against 3A schools.

Action begins Feb. 6 between the Hot Dogs and Stars. Semifinals are Feb. 13 and the championship is Feb. 14.

Attempts to reach Crawfordsville head coach Tony Thomas and North Montgomery head coach Ryan Nuppnau were unsuccessful.
