NEW MARKET – A decade ago, North Montgomery volleyball won their first Sectional championship in five years. They were ranked No. 9 in Class 2A and were led by senior Lauran Thompson.
The Southmont girls soccer team kicked off their practices with multiple two-a-days working on footwork, ball control and team drills. They play their first game on Aug. 16 at home against Cascade.
Two County golfers had memorable seasons their junior year.

Southmont’s Justin Lowe will be joining the Indiana University East Red Wolves Track team this fall. His recent graduation was accompanied with a trip to the IHSAA Track & Field State meet.
Barrett breaks records, vaults to State
Mountie Brittany Barrett has never been scared of heights. In fact, if she could do high school all over again, she would try out gymnastics as well.
Aaron Cox was one of 102 Indiana high school baseball players who achieved 2016 IHSCBA Academic All-State. Cox is now a Southmont graduate who was a three-sport athlete during his time as a Mountie.
Brooks Long awarded The Paper’s Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year
Two shoes could be seen flying around the Robert C. Haugh track at the IHSAA State Track & Field meet on June 4. They bore the signature of the runner: Brooks.
The Paper’s Boys Track & Field All-County Team consists of seven stand-out athletes from Montgomery County. Four Chargers, two Mounties and one Athenian represent their schools.
