South is ready for a clean slate.
VEEDERSBURG -- Southmont's (7-25) volleyball team didn't have a season for the ages. But their slate is wiped clean tomorrow when they play a 3-22 Seeger team in the 2A volleyball sectional 38 at Fountain Central.

"We match up well with the other teams in our sectional. We have played all the teams competitively with the exception of Clinton Central," Southmont head coach Erin Barry said.

Southmont got just one win in the Sagamore Athletic Conference, but they are the only 2A school in the conference.

"I do think the tough competition in our conference better prepares us for sectionals," Barry told The Paper. "Every team in our conference is extremely good and competes at that higher level of play. Those type of games prepare us for what we will see in the postseason."

The Mounties will rely on the senior duo of Sammy White and Abby Bullerdick on offense. Bullerdick leads the way with 151 kills and 52 aces. White has 128 kills and 42 aces.

Another great server is junior Kaiti Chadd with 40 aces. Though she doesn't boast gaudy numbers, senior Breanna Mason is second on the team with 161 service points, just one behind Bullerdick.

Defensively, Chadd anchors the Mounties with 337 digs. They aren't ultra-effective at the net, but Kasey Burton did tally 24 blocks this year.

"The keys to our success with be to play mentally tough and communicate the entire game," Barry said. "We have to keep the ball in play and eliminate our mistakes."

The Mounties will be without senior hitter Brooke England, who went down with a leg injury early this season. Beyond that, Barry said the Mounties have no new injuries and are ready to go at the sectional field.

The Mounties and Patriots play Thursday at 6 p.m. at Fountain Central. The winner will take on the winner of Clinton Central and Riverton Parke on Saturday at 11 a.m.
