NEW CASTLE - Fifteen wrestlers from Montgomery County made the trip to New Castle on Saturday for the semistate portion of the state tournament. Only three punched tickets to Banker's Life Fieldhouse and the state finals in Indianapolis.

Southmont's Connor Moore and Zach Worm will be joined by North Montgomery's Jesse Archer at the state finals. They are among the final 16 wrestlers in their weight classes. If they win on Friday, they'll place in the top-eight and guarantee themselves a medal. If they lose on Friday, they go home empty-handed.

Moore entered unranked in the 138-pound field. He won the first round with a pin and stuck the No. 1 seeded wrestler in the ticket round to advance. Moore lost to Tommy Cash, the defending state champion out of Lawrence North. Cash is ranked second in the state. Moore lost a 3-2 decision to Keegan Stansberry, of Hamilton Southeastern to finish fourth.

  • Mounties victorious at last
    Sunday, February 1, 2015 2:50 PM
All season long the Southmont wrestling team has known it was one of the best teams in the area, and even the state. They showed that with a third-place finish at the IHSWCA Team State Duals. But at the Montgomery County and Sagamore Athletic Conference meets, the Mounties left disappointed, with second and third place finishes.

Saturday at the IHSAA sectional at Crawfordsville, the Mounties left victorious.

The Mounties won six of the 14 weight classes and placed 12 wrestlers in the top-four to amass 244.5 points and edge out North Montgomery, which gained 236 points. Crawfordsville finished third with 154 points.

FORTVILLE -- The Southmont wrestling traveled to Fortville Saturday for the Marauder Team Duals Invite and finished in 2nd place, going 4-1 on the day.

Four Mounties had perfect records on the day to win their weight classes. Alex Grino (106 pounds), Boone Welliever (126), Wayne Highfield (145) and Anthony Gregg (195) were not beaten Saturday.

Additionally, Evan Hubble (113 pounds), Zach Worm (170) and Caleb Martin (220) finished 4-1.

"We wrestled very well. It was a really good showing," Southmont head coach Kevin Wilkinson said. "It was really our first test since the conference meet and that huge disappointment. Hopefully this is an indicator of how we will wrestle next Saturday."

Southmont ended the regular season with a record of 24-6 (6-1 SAC). The 24 dual wins are the most in school history. The Mounties will travel to Crawfordsville on Saturday for the sectional meet to kick off the postseason.

NEW MARKET - The Southmont wrestling team celebrated the last home dual of their four seniors in style Wednesday night. The Mounties dominated the McCutcheon Mavericks, 65-11. Southmont lost only one head-to-head matchup. Six of McCutcheon's points came from a forfeit at 285 pounds.

"I can't complain. My guys wrestled a lot better. Tonight we really focused on intensity and just wrestling a full six minutes," Southmont head coach Kevin Wilkinson said. "Because we didn't do that last Saturday (at the Sagamore Athletic Conference meet) and everyone saw how that worked for us. I stressed intensity and aggressiveness. They took what I had to say and I think that motivated them. Hopefully we'll keep it rolling.

  • Tigers take Sagamore
    Monday, January 19, 2015 4:47 PM
It all came down to head-to-head matchups Saturday at the Sagamore Athletic Conference wrestling meet. North Montgomery held a slim lead over Lebanon going into the final placement round of the tournament. The teams met six times in the final round and Lebanon won five of those matches to pick up a win with 228 team points. The Chargers finished second with 212 points. Southmont was third at 200.5. Crawfordsville finished sixth with a team score of 122.

"Like I said in the paper, Lebanon's a juggernaut. They beat us five or six times in the final round. They're a tough team. They're good top to bottom," North Montgomery head coach Maurice Swain said. "I knew coming in that the first two rounds were big. And we wrestled well in those rounds. But if you don't win many matches in the final round it's hard to win the tournament.

  • Mounties ready for sectional foe
    Friday, January 2, 2015 4:57 PM
MONTEZUMA - The Southmont boys' basketball team will kick off the second half of their season with a trip to Riverton Parke tonight.

The Panthers have struggled to a 1-9 record this season. Southmont is off to a 3-4 start with two of their losses coming in the last weekend before Christmas break to Western Boone and North Vermillion.

The Panthers and Mounties could potential meet in the Class 2A sectional at Southmont in March.

"We haven't approached it differently (because it's a sectional opponent). The sectional is still a long ways away," Southmont head coach Jon Sparks said. "(Over break) we've been really focused on the process. We've had six days of practice where we've been trying to fine-tune some things. We've added a few wrinkles offensively and defensively, and we've been really focused on ourselves over break."

  • Southmont matmen focused on IHSWCA Team State
    Thursday, January 1, 2015 4:59 PM
The Montgomery County wrestling championship eluded the Southmont Mounties on Dec. 20. They have a chance on Saturday to claim an even bigger title when they wrestle at the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association Team State Duals at Ball State.

The Mounties (13-2) are in Class 2A and they are seeded fourth out of the 12 teams in their class.

Southmont head coach Kevin Wilkinson said that he was happing with the seeding, considering they weren't sure what the loss to North Montgomery at county would do to the committee's view of his team.

"With the team there, the committee decided we should be the fourth seeded team. I was OK with that," Wilkinson said.
