American Legion kicks off summer season

The American Legion Bryon Cox Post 72 baseball team got their season going last night as they played Franklin at North Montgomery. The team was scheduled to start the season this past Sunday in a double header against Danville, but the games cancelled due to rain. The team is looking to improve off an 11-12 record from last season.

Head Coach Kyle Proctor says that on paper, this could be one of the best teams they’ve had in a long time.

“We have a great mix of experience and youth on our team this season,” Proctor said. “We have several pitchers who pitched a lot of quality innings for us last season, so that’s something that we’re really excited about. We’re just ready to go out there and see what we’ve got.”

The team is comprised of mainly players from the Sagamore Athletic Conference, however there are some players from the Wabash River Conference.

Crawfordsville players include Cale McCarty, Sam Riddle, Austin Motz, Carson Scott and Jake Decker. Southmont adds players Cole Roach, Ashton Pruett, Cole Wemer who is now attending Marian University, and Ryan Stanley. North Montgomery will bring Second Team All-SAC player Owen Gregg to the team.

The coaching staff for Post 72 is comprised of many Montgomery County faces. Proctor who graduated from North Montgomery in 1994 is in his third season with the team. Brad Wininger (Southmont 1984) is in his 16th season, Matt McCarty (Crawfordsville 1994) his second season, 12th season Johnathan Pickett (Seeger 1998), and in his first season with Post 72 is Brad Howell (Fountain Central 2018).

Post 72 will be playing their first nine games of the year at home (North Montgomery) before hitting the road. Admission is free, so come out to the ballpark and enjoy some great baseball.
