THORNTOWN – In a rematch of the Sugar Creek Classic championship, Crawfordsville (12-5, 5-0 SAC) travelled down snowy Highway 32 to battle with the Western Boone Stars (7-8, 2-4 SAC). It took overtime, but just like at the Classic, the Athenians pulled out the victory in a physical affair, 74-65.
“This was an important game for us,” said Athenian head coach David Pierce, “we spent a lot of time yesterday and today emphasizing that if we didn’t win this game, our goal of a conference championship would be tough.”
Crawfordsville’s hard-nosed, assertive defense was out in full force Thursday night. The Athenians forced a total of 23 turnovers and they were led by junior Tray Scorza who contributed eight steals.
Crawfordsville found themselves with their largest lead of the game at 54-43 with 3:30 to go in the fourth quarter before a 14-3 Star run tied the ballgame at 57 and forced overtime.
“We struggled from the field in the second half. We took good shots but we couldn’t get them to fall,” said Pierce. “Our rebounding also collapsed, they were able to grab some huge offensive rebounds.”
The Athenians bounced back however, opening up overtime play on a 12-0 run. Karsten Williamson and Jesse Johnson-Hall contributed seven and six points respectively in the quarter to help lift Crawfordsville over Western Boone 74-65 and keep the Athenians undefeated in conference play.
“Williamson was huge for us down the stretch. He was aggressive and was able to get to the free throw line to help extend our lead,” said Pierce.
The Athenians were led offensively by Johnson-Hall who finished with his third double-double of the season. Out for a large majority of the first half in foul trouble, the sophomore shot an almost perfect 8-9 from the field and added 8 points from the charity strike to end the game with 24 points and 11 rebounds.
Crawfordsville will travel to Montezuma Saturday afternoon to take on Riverton Parke in a non-conference match-up. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:30 pm.
