MONTEZUMA – Coming off Thursday’s overtime Sagamore Athletic Conference win over Western Boone, and with a tough road test looming Tuesday at Lafayette Central Catholic, the Crawfordsville Athenians played a trap game Saturday at Riverton Parke. The Athenians showed no signs of overlooking the Panthers, as they cruised to a 77-48 victory.
“We shot the ball really well today,” head coach David Pierce said. “We shot 43 percent from three, and we had to guys get really hot.”
Those two were Jesse Johnson-Hall and Anthony Gonzalez. Each finished with 27-points with Johnson-Hall finishing with a Conference leading fourth double-double hauling in 13 boards.
“Gonzo was 10-of-18 from the floor, while Jesse was 50 percent and had four steals,” Pierce said of the duo. “KW (Karsten Williamson) played well too. He only played three quarters, had 11-points, 8-assists and 4-steals. He gets the double-double if he plays in the fourth.”
Crawfordsville put up 45 points in the first half on their way to a season high 77. The Athenian defense shut down the Panther offense and never let up throughout. Case in point, the Athenians were up 30 early in the fourth quarter, and Carson Scott takes a hard charge that got the bench up on its feet.
“That tells you everything about his character,” Pierce said of the junior. “It doesn’t matter what the score is, he leads by example and always plays hard.”
Crawfordvsille (13-4) won their sixth in a row and eighth of their last nine. Tray Scorza and Cameron Saunders each chipped in 5.
Riverton Parke (4-12) was led by Jonathan Virostko’s 14 and Logan Harrison’s 10.
The Athenians next opponent, Lafayette Central Catholic, is 13-2 and ranked No. 3 in Class 1A.
“They’re playing exceptionally well, and we’re going to have our hands full,” Pierce said. “We have three starters sick. We’ll get them healthy and be ready to go Tuesday.”
