Crawfordsville came out hot against Lebanon Friday night in both teams’ Sagamore Athletic Conference opener. The Athenians opened up an 11-point lead midway through the first and needed every point of that, as they held on for a hard fought 44-41 victory over the Tigers.
“It was a good team win. Lebanon always plays hard, so to come out and fight like that, we’re really pleased,” said Athenian head coach David Pierce. “Their strength is that they’re strong and play hard. So, it encouraged me to see how we responded.”
The Athenians lead 15-4 midway through the first, only to see Lebanon storm back and take an 18-17 lead midway through the second. However, Crawfordsville closed the quarter on a 7-0 run to take a 6-point lead into the break.
The Athenians received contributions from their entire lineup. Tray Scorza and Will Kellerman paced Crawfordsville in the first half as each scored nine points to help them to a 24-18 lead at the half.
They expanded the lead again to 11 at the end of the third, thanks to an 8-0 to end the period. Again, the Tigers clawed back, getting the deficit down to three, 35-32 with 4:17 remaining in the fourth.
Enter Karsten Williamson. The sophomore, who had missed his previous 5-shots from the floor hit back-to-back 3’s to stretch the lead back to 9, and they’d close it out from the line.
“Karsten was huge tonight. Not only for the two big threes, but he committed just two turnovers on the night while playing point,” Pierce said of the sophomore. “We told him in the last timeout if he was open to shoot. That’s the confidence we have in him.”
Lebanon (1-2, 0-1 SAC) was led by Carson Burtron’s 14, while Hunter Crew finished with 10.
Crawfordsville (2-1, 1-0 SAC) was led by Scorza’s 12 and Kellerman’s 11. They outrebounded the taller Tigers 31-27.
“We had a lot of guys step up for this team win. Cam Saunders held Burtron to just 14 and pulled down some big rebounds,” said Pierce. “Scorza had 4 steals and shot over 50 percent from the field while Jesse Johnson-Hall was a rim protector all night.”
The Athenians are back in action tomorrow as they’ll host Attica. The Varsity will start around 7:30.
