LINDEN – North Montgomery opened their season Tuesday defeating Pioneer 43-37 behind a balanced scoring attack. Head coach Ryan Nuppnau, who enters his fifth season at the Charger helm, liked what he saw.
“We had multiple opportunities in the second half to fold and give up, but they kept fighting. They kept finding a way to keep the lead,” he said. “That was a positive to take away. We were able to find a way to maintain and extend the lead and pull it out down the stretch.”
The Chargers will rely heavily on their senior leadership this season. Kendall Humphreys, Mady Altman, and Tori Warren will help set the tone for North, especially early.
“Kendall does a great job of taking care of the ball, orchestrating our offense and getting everyone in position,” Nuppnau said. “Mady will be our down low presence. We’ll look for her to score and rebound, while Tori has a big body with long arms. We’ll look for her to do some damage defensively and rebound.”
They’ll also return junior Emily Sennett who averaged 7.3 points and 4.1 rebounds per game last season. Sophomore Makinze Rominger led the Chargers Tuesday night with 10-points, while junior Maddie Moseley finished with eight.
“It was nice that we had multiple girls score,” said Nuppnau. “We’ll need that throughout the season. When you spread the love around like that, it’s hard to defend and shut down.
“In the second half, we were able to contain Frontier’s leading scorer to just four second half points, and they went stagnant,” he continued. “For us, having anyone that can take the reins and score at any time is huge.”
Nuppnau would like to see this team not only grow together on the court but take some valuable like skills off it. “I’d like to see get tougher and more confident on the court and have a better understanding of the team aspect in the offense,” he said. “More importantly, we’re pushing leadership. We want them to take that away to help them later in life.”
The Chargers open the season with three of their first four games at home, including tonight’s game against Parke Heritage. It will be the Wolves first ever game after the school was formed with the merger or Rockville and Turkey Run. Game time is 7:30.
