LINDEN – North Montgomery looked to continue their early season momentum Friday night when Parke Heritage made the trip to Charger gymnasium. The Wolves, playing their first game in program history, made it count, as they pulled away from North in the second half on their way to a 69-52 win, dropping the Chargers to 1-1 on the season.
“You have to take your hats off to them. They’re extremely athletic, they’re quick, and they anticipate well,” said North head coach Ryan Nuppnau. “Because of their athleticism, they forced us into quite a few turnovers and that was ultimately our downfall.”
The Chargers kept the game close in the first half scoring the last four points of the first quarter, and the last five points of the second to trail just 24-21 at the break. North didn’t help themselves in the first half committing 20 of their 34 turnovers during that span.
“With so many turnovers, you don’t get an opportunity to shoot the ball. Even with those turnovers, we still should’ve won the game,” Nuppnau continued. “We were 8-of-20 from the line and missed 10 easy baskets, that’s 25-points. If we hit our free throws and hit our layups, we still win the game despite the turnover margin.”
Parke Heritage extended their lead to as many as 13 in the third and to as many as 20 in the fourth, before a Madi Welch three gave us the final tally.
The Wolves (1-0) had three in double figures led by Taylor Dugger’s 21. Kylen McMullen had a double-double with 15-points and 10-boards while Grace Ramsay finished with 11-points. They’ll host South Putnam Tuesday.
Kendall Humphreys led the Chargers (1-1) with 19, 13 coming in the fourth. Emily Sennett finished with 14. The Chargers shot 50 percent from the floor, including 8-of-14 from beyond the arc, but took 26 less shots than Parke Heritage because of the turnovers.
North Montgomery will travel to Elwood Wednesday to battle the Panthers before hosting Attica Friday.
