Matt Merica announced late Monday evening that he would be stepping down as the baseball coach at North Montgomery. Merica will continue to serve as athletic director and head the search for a replacement.

“I’ve decided to step away from coaching after five years to spend more time with my family,” Merica said. “I have three kids, and it’s important to spend time with them.”

During his five seasons the Charger baseball team had an overall record of 84-58-1 and were crowned sectional champions in the 2017-18 season.

Merica reflected on his five seasons as head coach.

“I’m going to miss being around the kids every day,” he said. “It’s definitely going to take some getting used to.”

Merica made an immediate impact on the program when he took over for Matt Voorhees in 2015. During his tenure the Chargers had two 20-win seasons in 2015-16, and 2017-18. Before Merica arrived, the Chargers hadn’t had a 20-win season since the 1999-00 season.

This past season the Chargers went 7-20 and had their first losing season since 2010-11.
