Southmont’s boys’ basketball season came to an end Wednesday evening after their first round loss to Western Boone in game two of Sectional 25 play. Any Mountie momentum was hampered by offensive rebounds and the second chance points added up in their 59-46 defeat.
“It’s disappointing. We’ll miss our three seniors. We wish them the best in the future and they’ll always be a part of the Southmont basketball program. For the younger guys, it’s time to step up and there’s a lot of opportunities,” said Southmont head coach Jake Turner.
Justin Howard began the game on a high note offensively for the Mounties. The senior scored their first 11 points, stretching into the second quarter, while assisting on two other plays in the first half. After a Patrick Shallenberger tip-in buzzer beater, Southmont only found themselves down eight points heading into the halftime break.
“[Howard] competed hard tonight,” said Turner, “He’s a talented offensive player that has carried us along all season and he did what he had to do to give us a chance to win.”
The Stars began to pull away in the second half, largely thanks to offensive rebounds and, coincidentally, second chance opportunities. They finished the game with 15 offensive boards and 42 points in the paint.
“We didn’t do the things we needed to do to win,” said Turner, “The keys to the game for us was to take care of the ball, take good shots, win the boards, and play great transition defense. They dominated us on the boards. You can’t give a team more opportunities to score. You can’t expect to win when that happens.”
Western Boone managed to hit their free throws down the stretch and walk away with the first round victory 59-46.
The Mounties were led once again by senior Justin Howard. He amassed 22 points on 10-16 shooting while picking up a team high 6 rebounds. Classmate Cole Roach added 7 points of his own.
Western Boone finished with three players in double figures. Senior Lucas Morton finished with 16, Spencer Wright had 13 and Patrick Shallenberger contributed 12. Shallenberger also donated a game-high 7 rebounds, three of those coming on the offensive end.
The Stars will take on Crawfordsville on Friday night with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 pm.
