North Montgomery and Southmont met for the second time this season Saturday afternoon in the consolation game of the Sugar Creek Classic. The Mounties took home the victory back in November and also came away with the win Saturday 48-42.
“I’m really happy for the kids tonight,” said Mountie head coach Jake Turner, “They’ve been focused and it is good to see them get rewarded for their hard work.”
“We felt good coming into tonight,” said North Montgomery coach Andrew Evertts, “We saw some good improvement in the opening game against Crawfordsville but I felt like we took a step back tonight.”
The shooting woes that have plagued North Montgomery all season continued Saturday night. However, despite shooting only 25 percent from the field, the Chargers found themselves only down by four points going into the halftime break.
“We aren’t the best shooting team. We know that,” said Evertts, “We are going to continue to drill it and work it in practice but that is something that takes time during the offseason.”
Southmont hit a new stride in the third, beginning the quarter on a 10-4 run and shooting over 50% from the field, stretching their lead from four to eight points.
“After our game last night, I asked the guys ‘Are we tough?” They assured me that they were and that they were going to go out and prove it,” said Turner. “Obviously we have some things that we need to work on but we showed signs of life and heart tonight and that was good to see.”
The Mounties defense held true in the waning minutes after a push from North Montgomery to help them hold on to the victory 48-42.
“Good team effort tonight. It was a physical game and we adjusted well to it,” said Turner. “I was pleased with the play of our two freshmen Avery Saunders and Logan Oppy. Logan came in and hit shots, made great passes and even took a charge. Avery blocked some shots and rebounded well for us.”
Southmont will play host to Seeger on Friday, looking to keep their winning ways while North Montgomery will travel to Danville for a boy/girl doubleheader.
