In a rematch of last year’s Sugar Creek Classic opener, Southmont faced off against a surging Western Boone team loaded with offensive star power. The Mounties came out of the gates hot, however, the Stars exploded in the second half, running away with the victory 59-42.
“We were able to start off on the right foot and control the tempo early,” said Southmont head coach Jake Turner, “but we had too many careless turnovers that allowed them to battle back into it.”
The Mounties executed well in the first quarter, jumping out to an early 8-2 on the back of Justin Howard while forcing four Star turnovers defensively. The Stars eventually found their game and clawed back in the second quarter, going into the halftime break tied at 22.
“In the second half, it was simple, they were tougher than us. We have to get mentally and physically tougher. We turned down charges and didn’t go after loose balls,” said Turner, “Playing that way doesn’t work against tough teams like Western Boone.”
Western Boone kept the momentum going in the second half, forcing 14 Mountie turnovers and outscoring Southmont 37-20 to handily take the victory 59-42.
“We are playing well in spurts, and we have been for three or four weeks now, but in order to win and not just compete in these games we need to have more toughness and more leadership,” said Turner.
Offensively, Justin Howard led the Mounties in scoring, finishing with 18 points while Cole Roach and Austin Bowman each added 7 of their own. Roach also contributed a game high 10 rebounds on the night.
“Drew Glancy did a great job tonight for us. He was aggressive and knocked down some big shots in the second half,” said Turner, “I also saw some good things out of Luke Gregg and Austin Bowman.”
Western Boone advances to face Crawfordsville Saturday in the championship game at 7:30 while Southmont will take on North Montgomery in the consolation game at 6 pm.
“The team that typically wins the consolation game is the team that wants it more and the team that plays harder,” added Turner. “We have to play harder than them and we have to execute better if we want to win tomorrow.”
