NEW MARKET – Fresh off their dramatic one-point victory against county rival North Montgomery the night before, the Mounties hosted Cloverdale on Saturday night looking for their second win of the season. Southmont staged a dramatic comeback in the fourth quarter, but fell short late, losing 56-46.
“I thought we played well enough to win the game,” said Southmont head coach Jake Turner, “We just had a few too many turnovers, especially unforced turnovers in the first half.”
Cloverdale’s defense made themselves known early. The Shamrocks forced nine first half turnovers while holding Southmont to only 5-21 shooting in the half. Meanwhile, they built a healthy 13 point lead, going into halftime up 24-11.
“They start five guys that can shoot and drive,” said Turner, “it was tough to keep them out of the paint and still be able to close out on their shooters. After halftime, we needed to step up.”
And step up they did, Justin Howard led the charge, shooting 6-10 from the field, including 3-6 from the 3pt line, in the half to start the charge. In the fourth quarter, Cole Roach added six points of his own to help bring the Mounties within six with three minutes left.
“Justin is competitive and a really good shooter but I was proud of his defense tonight,” said Turner, “He wanted the challenge of guarding their best player and he guarded him well the rest of the game.”
Unfortunately, the comeback fell short with Cloverdale converting on their endgame free throws to come away with the win 56-46.
Howard led the team offensively, finishing the night with 20 points on 7-18 shooting and 4-4 from the line. Cole Roach and Austin Bowman both finished with 12. Freshman Logan Oppy also finished with a team high 7 rebounds.
The Mounties will take part in yet another back-to-back next weekend, first taking their talents to Danville on Friday before playing host to Greencastle on Saturday night.
“It’s going to be a tough weekend. We have to have four good days of practice. The season is still young, we just have to stay together and continue to improve,” said Turner.
