The Crawfordsville baseball team faced stiff competition Saturday at the annual Athenian Invitational. The home nine took second. They beat Milwaukee Riverside 10-0 in the tournament opener before falling 4-0 to Lafayette Central Catholic in the title game. The Knights are the No. 1 ranked team in Class 2A while the Athenians are No. 5 in Class 3A.
In the opener, Crawfordsville plated a run in the first and three each in the second, fifth and sixth to secure the win.
Cam Saunders and Caleb Coons each had two hits in the morning game. Carson Scott, Josh Blackburn and Andrew Martin also had hits. Saunders drove in three runs. Blackburn tallied two RBIs while Coons, Martin and Henry Taylor each had one.
Saunders worked five innings of 1-hit, shutout ball. He struck out 11 against three walks. Cale McCarty closed things out with a perfect inning.
Crawfordsville just mustered three hits against the Knights’ Jacob Benson. Scott, Jake Decker and Austin Warren accounted for the hits. McCarty drew a pair of walks.
Warren was effective on the mound, keeping Central Catholic off the board until the fifth. He fanned nine, walked two and gave up three earned runs. Decker worked the seventh, striking out one and keeping the Knights at bay.
Crawfordsville (7-3) suffered its first in-state loss of the year. They’ll head to Western Boone Tuesday to get back into Sagamore Athletic Conference action.

Chargers fall
LINDEN – North Montgomery’s baseball team was upended Saturday in a 4-1 loss to Lafayette Jeff. The Bronchos jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first. They padded that with runs in the fourth and fifth and staved off a Charger rally in the seventh.
North Montgomery got hits from Kai Warren, Owen Gregg, Griffon Fuller and a double from Jacob Ritter. Alec Asbury earned the RBI.
The Chargers (2-6) are at Seeger Monday before heading to Danville for Sagamore action Tuesday.
