Crawfordsville’s girls’ basketball team came in to their Sagamore Athletic Conference matchup against Lebanon at home looking to rebound from a tough stretch of games last week. However, Lebanon opened up an 11-point lead in the first half, and blew the game open with an 18-0 run that spanned the end of the third and start of the fourth, to pull away for a 68-43 victory over the Athenians.
Crawfordsville didn’t have an answer for the Lady Tigers full court pressure as they committed 36 turnovers in the contest, allowing Lebanon to shoot nearly 45 percent from the field.
“We knew we were going to be challenged by anyone with size, and Lebanon has that,” said Athenian head coach Tony Bean. “I think as a team, we were disappointed tonight with how we performed.
“Everything we planned would’ve worked, if we just would’ve executed. It’s a lot of little things,” he continued. “We need to make shorter passes, use pass fakes and meet the ball. If we do that, it’s a tighter game.”
The turning point of the game came at the end of the third and start of the fourth as Lebanon (4-4, 1-0 SAC) went on an 18-0 run to open up a 28-point lead that the Athenians couldn’t recover from.
“They were stronger and more physical than us,” Bean said of the Tigers. “They wanted it more than we did. There’s no excuse for that. We weren’t scared or intimated, when they’re run started happening, we panicked. We broke down fundamentally.”
The Athenians (2-7, 0-3 SAC) were led by Lauren Kellerman’s 12 points and seven boards while Maycee York finished with 10 points.
They will host Attica Tuesday.
