Crawfordsville may be in the midst of the toughest stretch of their schedule heading into Sectional. With Tuesday’s five-point loss to Class A, No. 7, Lafayette Central Catholic, the Athenians are right back into Sagamore Conference action Friday when they travel to Lizton to battle second place Tri-West.

The Bruins are 12-5 overall and 4-1 in the Conference. They are tied with Danville, who battles first-place Lebanon on Tuesday. Tri-West, with a little help from the Warriors, could tie for the Conference championship.

The Bruins will have a week’s break, having played their last game on Feb. 4, a 22-point win over Southmont. They are led in scoring by sophomore Tyler Watson at 18.5 per game. Junior Peyton Hendershot averages 12.8 points and 11.3 rebounds.

The Athenians are 7-11 overall and 1-5 in the Conference. Devin Guard leads the way at 12.4 points per game. However, the junior has averaged 18.5 points over his last seven. Trent Johnson leads the team in rebounding at 5.7 per game, and is second on the team in scoring at 8.9.

Senior Konnor Smith had his best offensive performance of the season Tuesday with 14 points and six boards against the Knights.

“I was really pleased with Konnor,” Athenian coach David Pierce said after the Lafayette Central Catholic game. “He came off the bench and hit some big shots.”

The Athenians and Bruins have split their 16 overall meetings 8-8. However, Tri-West has won the last two, including last year’s 63-28 win.

Crawfordsville will look to pick up their second conference win and defeat a Sectional opponent along the way. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
