LIZTON – Crawfordsville ran into a buzz-saw Friday night at Tri-West. The Bruins shot 75 percent from the floor in the first quarter on their way to a 24-4 lead and cruised to a 74-49 Sagamore Conference victory.

They connected on 9-of-12 shots, including 6-of-7 from beyond the arc, while the Athenians shot just 13 percent, including 0-of-9 from three point range. Crawfordsville was never closer than 17 the remainder of the way.

“We dug ourselves a hole in the first quarter,” Athenian coach David Pierce said. “A hole that was really deep and hard to get out of, but I was proud of our kids, the way they bounced back.”

The Bruins continued their torrid shooting in the second, finishing the first half shooting 67 percent from the floor, 14-of-21, and 58 percent from downtown, 7-12. However, the Athenians were able to keep the deficit from getting out of reach hitting 3-of-9 in the quarter and scoring 16 of their own. Tri-West took a 41-20 lead to the locker room.

“We lost by one in the second and won the third quarter by a point,” Pierce added. “When you shoot 26 percent from the field, you’re going to struggle on the road.”

The Athenians outscored Tri-West 19-18 in the third, but the Bruins were able to escape with the 25-point win.

“I thought our guards struggled tonight,” Pierce said. “However, we were able to keep our turnovers down, and I was pleased with that.”

Tri-West (13-5, 5-1 SAC) had three in double figures, led by Tyler Watson’s 16. Derek Lucas and Matthew Chinn each finished with 11.

Trent Johnson paced the Athenians with a double-double. He had 12 points and 10 rebounds. Devin Guard finished with 11 and Cameron Harris 8.

“I thought Trent had a good night,” Pierce said. “He did a lot of little things, like his 10 rebounds, and going 9-of-10 from the line.”

The Athenians (7-12, 1-6 SAC) are back in action Tuesday when they travel to Attica. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
