BROWNSBURG – Crawfordsville’s Caleb Whicker will dive again at the IHSAA State Finals after placing in the top eight in the Brownsburg Diving Regionals Tuesday night.

Whicker scored a 400.25 and maintained his seed position.

“He went into this competition seeded third and he managed to stay there so that was exciting,” Athenian diving coach Dave Whitehead said.

He added that not many of the kids were hitting their dives very well but Whicker had enough to get through.

“You could just about see the crazy sigh of relief and all the tension was gone,” Whitehead said of Whicker. “He is just extremely excited.”

Whicker went through a total of 11 dives in the night, with five in the preliminaries, three in the semi-finals and three more in the finals. He placed behind Richmond’s Isaac Khamis who scored a 523.85 and Tri-West’s Evan Cooper who finished with a 483.55.

Last year was junior Whicker’s first time to Regionals and this year is the first time an Athenian has made it to State since the 2009-10 season when Eric Totheroh placed eighth and advanced on. Totheroh ended placing 30th for Crawfordsville.

The diving rounds Saturday start with 32 competitors, narrows down to 20 after prelims and 16 after semis.

“If he can make it to the sweet 16, I would be ecstatic,” Whitehead said.
