Crawfordsville's boys' soccer team kicked its season off in strange-but winning-fashion. In an oft-delayed match, the Athenians got a leg up in the Sagamore Athletic Conference by beating Western Boone. The Stars were last year's defending sectional champions. The final finished 2-0.

Kalidou Diaw scored both goals for the Athenians. They both came in the first half from him weaving through the Star defense and finding the back of the net. Westin Evans was credited with an assist on the second goal.

The game was delayed 45 minutes in the first half. They then finished the half and played six minutes into the second half. Play resumed once more, only for the game to be called for good in with six minutes remaining in regulation.

"For all the starts and restarts and everything, I felt like it was good to keep them on task," Crawfordsville head coach Dan Durrwachter said. "It was a big game. The guys, as a team, played really really well."

Joel Raters and Dane Baldwin split time in the goal, as the team is still sorting out who will earn the starting spot there.

The Athenians (1-0) travel to Northview on Thursday and travel to the Frankfort Invite on Saturday.
