DOVER - Although behind, the Western Boone football team was confident they could come back in the second half Friday night against fifth-ranked Tri-West in the sectional title game.

The Stars trailed by five, but had led for most of the first 24 minutes. The second half was a different story.

The Bruins scored touchdowns on their first four possessions of the second half and held the Stars to 55 second-half yards, pulling away to a 54-28 victory.

"They just overwhelmed us in the second half," Western Boone head coach Justin Pelley said. "We made some big plays in the first half and they made some big plays too. We started dropping like flies in the second half, had to move around some guys and they are just really good. They can run the ball and throw the ball and they proved that tonight. We fired everything we had at them in the first half and we had some chances, we were right there in the game. But we only played a first-half of football tonight."

The game turned in Tri-West's favor late in the first half.

Trailing 16-14, Western Boone scored a touchdown on a 6-yard pass from Nathanial Bye to Riggs Baxter with 1:48 left in the half to go up 21-16.

But on the very next play from scrimmage, Tri-West quarterback Jake Hendershot connected with Wes Cook for a 60-yard touchdown to give the Bruins a 23-21 lead.

Western Boone got into Bruins territory, but Bye was intercepted on a tipped ball and the Bruins returned it into WeBo territory.

The Stars appeared to hold when they intercepted Hendershot with no time left in the half, but the Stars were called for a defensive holding penalty off the ball to give Tri-West one more play.

They kicked a 34-yard field goal to make it 26-21 at the half.

Tri-West took the second-half kick and marched 80 yards on seven plays, scoring on a 22-yard pass from Hendershot to Judd Grubbs.

Western Boone was forced to punt on its next two possessions, while the Bruins extended their lead on a 45-yard run by Cook and a 41-yard pass from Hendershot to brother Peyton.

After a WeBo interception, the Bruins made it 38 unanswered points on a 76-yard touchdown pass from Hendershot to Grubbs.

Hendershot finished the game 18 of 22 for 326 yards and five touchdowns.

Grubbs had seven catches for 134 yards and three scores.

The Stars finish 9-4. Tri-West will play host to Guerin Catholic on Friday in regional play. Guerin Catholic defeated Hamilton Heights Friday to win their sectional.
