The Sagamore Athletic Conference survived opening night of the football season with a decent 5-3 record -- however, the conference's lone state-ranked team fell from the top spot in Indiana.

Tri-West came into Friday's showdown ranked No. 1 in Class 3A. West Lafayette was ranked seventh, so something had to give. That turned out to be the Bruins' defense as the Red Devils scored 43 points en route to a 43-23 lopsided victory.

Of course Montgomery County had a great night for the conference, going 3-0.

The other two winners turned out to be Western Boone and Frankfort. The two 3A schools ventured outside their classes in finding victories. The Stars clobbered the ninth-ranked Sheridan Blackhawks from Class 1A, 47-20. The Frankfort Hot Dogs went up in size, taking on 4A Western and walking away with a 38-29 victory.

The two remaining SAC schools, Lebanon and Danville, got off to rough starts. Lebanon, Class 4A, dropped a heartbreaker to fellow 4A school Mooresville, 18-15. Danville wasn't as lucky. The 3A Warriors got pounded by 4A Northview, 50-7.

Next week, all eight schools are back in action. Crawfordsville and North Montgomery hit the road, taking on West Vigo and Brebeuf, respectively. Southmont is at home against North Putnam. Western Boone travels to Harrison while Lebanon takes on Boone County rival Zionsville. Logansport will head to Frankfort and Mooresville plays its second-straight SAC game, taking on Danville. Tri-West goes from the frying pan into the fire when the Warriors take on the top-ranked team in Class 2A, Evansville Mater Dei.
