James “Jim” Frederick Cantrell

James Frederick Cantrell, known to many as “Jim,” age 75, of Crawfordsville, Ind. passed away Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2021.

Mr. Cantrell, the son of Frederick and Martha Cantrell, was born in Jellico, Tenn.

Upon graduating from Crawfordsville High School in 1964, he moved to Indianapolis to begin his land surveying career and married his first wife. He moved to various places around the Midwest only to return to the Crawfordsville area in 1984 where he farmed for fifteen years and remarried. Upon the passing of his second wife, Mr. Cantrell re-entered the surveying profession and began his own company.

The one constant surrounding much of his life was the love of the outdoors, no matter the weather condition. He earned the honor of Eagle Scout in his youth and continued to enjoy working and simply being outdoors throughout his life. 

Survivors include his daughter, Stephanie (Todd) Lemke of Austin, Texas; son, Stephen (Jennifer) Cantrell of Peoria, Ill.; grandchildren, Grace Vaughn of Monrovia, Ind., Kyle and Max Lemke, and Ella Cantrell; brother, David (Gail) Cantrell of Fort Meyers, Fla. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Michael Cantrell; his second wife, Susan Veatch Cantrell; and a son, James D. Cantrell.

Friends are invited to a visitation from 12 noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2021 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, 1306 E Main St in Crawfordsville, Ind. A funeral mass service will be held at 1 p.m., followed by internment at Oak Hill Cemetery.
