Barton Proclaims March 18 ‘Wabash College – Little Giants Day’

On Wednesday, Mayor Todd Barton proclaimed Friday, March 18, 2022 to be “Wabash College – Little Giants Day” in recognition of the Little Giants basketball team, who have reached the final four of the NCAA Division III men’s basketball tournament. He did so, “to encourage community support for the team.”

The Little Giants will play Elmhurst at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne. Wabash comes into the game with a record of 28-3 having won their last 24 games in a row since their Dec. 4 85-87 loss to Oberlin College. Wabash is led by senior guard Jack Davidson, who is averaging 25.7 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 4 assists per game while shooting 53.5% from the field, 48.8& from three, and 90.9% from the free throw line.

Davidson previously set the all-time NCAA record for consecutive free throws made with 95. Davidson is Wabash’s all-time leading scorer, as well as the leader in career 3-pointers, free throws made, and games started. He is second all time in assists, and with his start against Elmhurst will become the all-time leader in games played for Wabash with 109. The record is currently held by Josh Estelle, who set the record in the 1999-2000 season.

Elmhurst comes into the game with a record of 26-6, having won their last eight games since a Feb. 16 64-74 loss to Millikin University. The Bluejays are led by senior guard Jake Rhode, who is averaging 17.6 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game.

On the other side of the bracket, the Yellow Jackets of Randolph Macon College (31-1), the current No. 1 team in the nation per D3Hoops, will take on the Marietta College Pioneers (29-2).Tip-off for the first game is at 5 p.m. on Friday, while Wabash will tip off against Elmhurst at 7:30 p.m. The national championship game will be played at 6 p.m. on Saturday at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
