International School Of Indiana Hosts “Farewell To 49th Street”

For more than two decades, 200 W. 49th St. has been home to the International School of Indiana (ISI). On Friday, June 3, ISI will say goodbye to the 49th Street facility for the final time with a “Farewell to 49th Street” event. The event expands upon one of the school’s earliest traditions, the end-of-year celebration, Kermesse.

“Saying goodbye to this facility that has served as home to our students, families, and employees for 24 years is bittersweet,” said Elizabeth Head, ISI Head of School. “Our school has grown and excelled, and our community has shared so many memorable moments together in this space. The Chen Family Lower School is where our future is, but the 49th Street facility will always be an important and cherished part of our history.”

All ISI families, employees, students and alumni families are invited to attend this event from noon to 2 p.m. on Friday, June 3, at 200 W. 49th St., Indianapolis, IN 46208. Event attendees will have the opportunity to walk the halls one final time, to reminisce with community members and take part in the Kermesse activities. ISI began hosting classes at the 49th Street building, former IPS School #86, on April 15, 1998. The facility housed all of ISI’s students until 2001 when the first Upper School students moved to the Michigan Road campus. Over a 20-year period, the Michigan Road Campus was developed to include a high school, middle school, administrative offices and athletic facilities including a track and field and auxiliary soccer field. However, the Lower School remained housed in the 49th Street facility.

With the arrival of Head in 2019, the school’s third head of school, there came a renewed commitment to the vision of a unified campus community, and the success of the ONE ISI campaign, which raised $8.3 million dollars, made the construction of a new lower school possible. Beginning in August of 2022, the Chen Family Lower School officially opens its doors for the school’s pre-elementary and elementary programs, creating a unified campus for all ISI students ages three through grade 12.

About International School of Indiana (ISI)

International School of Indiana was founded in 1994 by civic, state, and business leaders. By combining the rigorous academic program with two powerful tools for future success–fluency in a foreign language and multicultural education, ISI offers the most distinct academics in the midwest. Annually more than 500 domestic and international students, age three to grade 12, access certified full-continuum International Baccalaureate (IB) programming and language immersion and dual language programs in French, Spanish, Mandarin, and English. Over the school’s 27-year history, 17 graduating classes totaling more than 450 graduates have received an exceptional academic foundation that has prepared them to seize opportunities, realize their fullest potential, and become responsible citizens and effective leaders in a rapidly globalizing and interdependent world. Beginning in 2022 the school will be unified on a beautiful 65-acre campus in the Midtown area of Indianapolis. The campus is nestled along the White River in a park-like setting and features the Chen Family Lower School, the Daneri Family Gymnasium, the Kathryn and Sidney Taurel Building, the Henry B. Blackwell Building, outdoor sports facilities and a nature trail. For more information, visit www.isind.org/admissions/discover.
