Lend A Helping Hand To A Child

The Montgomery County Youth Service Bureau, JUMP Program is currently seeking volunteers to mentor the youth of our community. The JUMP program matches adult volunteers with youth and they get together a minimum of 4 hours per month to hang out. The JUMP program even offers one free group activity per month to help out and allow the mentors and mentees a pre-planned activity. The JUMP program is a great way to give back to the community while at the same time, having fun. Mentoring a child benefits both the adult and the youth and studies show it can help a child build self-esteem and make better choices.

This is one of a series of articles that describe a youth on the JUMP waiting list who want to be matched with an adult volunteer. The name and age have been changed slightly to protect their privacy.

Kim is a 12-year girl who lives in a single parent home. Kim really likes school and loves all the subjects equally. Kim also enjoys going to the movies, doing hair, shopping, playing sports and swimming. She likes to bake, cook, do craft projects and play with cats and dogs. Her favorite thing to do is go shopping and eat at the China Buffet. When she grows up she would like to either be an actress, a hair stylist or a police officer. She hasn’t quite decided yet! Kim stated she would like a mentor to get her out of the house more and also someone to watch and play sports with her.

Kim’s mom say she is great by herself but sometimes doesn’t get along with her siblings. Her mom describes her as very smart but sometimes hard headed, like any pre-teen! She says Kim likes to swim, ride bikes and is excellent at reading.

Kim is easy to talk to and takes great care with her appearance. She loves to do most things and would be a great child to mentor.

If you are a female over age 21 or a couple and would like to mentor Kim, please contact Jill Hampton at 362-0694 ext. 103. Or email [email protected]. To learn more about the Montgomery County Youth Service Bureau, visit www.mcysb.org or visit their Facebook page at www.facebool.com/mcysb.org.
