Crawfordsville Mayor Todd Barton swore in five new hires to the Crawfordsville Fire Department (CFD). Haze Kashon, Calvin Chaney, Payton Busenbark, and James Rush were sworn in on Friday, October 20, 2023 and Christen Saunders was sworn in on October 11, 2023.

All five new firefighters are Crawfordsville natives. Kashon has always loved helping people and the caring nature of firefighting drew him to this career path. Chaney, Rush, Busenbark, and Saunders all participated in a West Central Indiana Career & Technical Education (CTE) program that allowed them to gain hands-on, real-world experiences in the fire and rescue or emergency medical technician (EMT) career path.

Having a passion for helping others and serving their community is important to this group of new recruits. All commented on how caring for and serving others was a big draw to this career path. “The CFD family has shown our family a tremendous amount of support and care,” shares Saunders. “I am so excited to serve the community I know and love.”

CFD Fire Chief Busenbark said “Crawfordsville Fire Department is extremely proud to have these five firefighters serve and protect the community they grew up in. I look forward to seeing how they progress and reach new goals during their careers here at CFD.”
