Turn New Year’s Resolutions into Healthy Habits with Purdue Extension

The start of a new year often brings fresh motivation to focus on health, energy, and feeling your best. Whether your goal is managing a chronic disease or simply building healthier routines that last beyond January, Purdue Extension Montgomery County is offering two upcoming programs designed to help you start the year strong and stay that way.

If your New Year’s resolution is about preventing disease, improving heart health, or simply enjoying food in a healthier way, Steps to a Healthy You offers a fresh and flavorful approach. This four-session class series explores the Mediterranean-style eating pattern and how it can fit into everyday life. Classes will be held January 15, 22, 29, and February 5 from 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. at the Crawfordsville District Public Library, Room B, led by Registered Dietitian Monica Nagele.

For just $30, participants receive lunch at each session, along with hands-on food demonstrations, cooking instruction, and practical tips they can use immediately. Each class highlights one or two of the “7 Simple Steps to Eating the Med Way,” paired with a mindfulness skill to support lasting behavior change. Participants often find themselves naturally eating more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and healthy fats without feeling restricted or overwhelmed.

For those living with type 2 diabetes, or supporting someone who is, Dining with Diabetes provides practical, research-based education to help participants take control of their health. This four-session program will be held Tuesday evenings on February 3, 10, 17, and 24 from 5:00–7:00 p.m. at the Montgomery County 4-H Building. Participants will learn how food choices, physical activity, and daily habits impact blood sugar, while gaining confidence in meal planning and understanding common diabetes-related medical tests. Each session includes cooking demonstrations, recipe tastings, and take-home resources focused on meals that are healthy, realistic, and enjoyable. The program is open to individuals with diabetes, family members, and caregivers. The cost is $40 per person or $65 per couple register by Jan 26th..

Diabetes continues to impact nearly 11% of Indiana adults, but research shows that people who learn to manage blood glucose, eat well, and stay active can significantly reduce their risk of complications and improve quality of life.

Both programs are designed to move beyond quick fixes and help participants build skills and confidence that last long after the new year buzz fades. Registration is required for both classes and can be found on the Purdue Extension Montgomery County website. For questions or assistance with registration, contact the Purdue Extension office at 765-364-6363 or email Monica Nagele at monicanagele@purdue.edu. Registration for Steps to a Healthy You closes January 12, and special thanks go to the Crawfordsville District Public Library for sponsoring part of the program.

This year, make a resolution that supports your health, your energy, and your future.
