The Linden Depot Museum is set to open for the 2026 season on April 3, welcoming visitors for another year of restoration, education, and immersive railroad experiences. The museum will be open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. throughout the season.
This year begins with an ambitious slate of restoration projects. A central focus is the preservation of historic caboose No. 497. Preparations are nearly complete for exterior repainting and interior repairs. Thanks to strong community support, the museum’s fundraising campaign is close to its goal. With just $1,000 remaining, the museum is positioned to complete this important effort.
Work is also advancing on the museum’s 1837 replica Norris 4-2-0 Lafayette steam locomotive. A new smokestack is being installed to restore the engine to its original coal-burning configuration, improving both historical accuracy and interpretive value.
To enhance visitor experience, the museum is laying 90 feet of new rail, allowing for longer and more enjoyable train rides.
Looking ahead, preparations are underway for the 6th Annual Midwest Railroad Fair, scheduled for Aug. 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year’s event will feature the 1837 steam locomotive and offer guests a rare opportunity to experience early railroad history up close. Attendees can also enjoy a Johnny Cash tribute performer with more than 50 years of experience, including performances for the Cash family. The fair will also bring together railroad executives from across the country, giving visitors a unique opportunity to engage with leaders in the industry.
The Linden Depot Museum is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and sharing railroad history.
