Sen. Deery Shares Update
| Like many of you, I have been frustrated with our federal government for years over its refusal to both secure the border and to create a rational, orderly immigration process that allows our country to maximize competitiveness. Most of the problems in our broken system can only be fixed by the federal government, but Indiana is doing its part through several common sense reforms. Specifically, Indiana’s reforms fall into five categories:Keeping criminals out of our communities. When someone commits a crime, is arrested, and determined to not be here legally, local authorities must allow federal authorities to take custody.Prohibiting employers from knowingly hiring illegal immigrants. Indiana’s new law increases penalties for violations, and repeat offenders will lose their license to operate in the state. This both benefits Hoosiers and protects workers from exploitation by bad actors.Preventing welfare payments to illegal immigrants through additional immigration status checks. Keeping illegal or dangerous commercial truck drivers off Indiana’s roads. To ensure individuals can read and understand temporary or digital road signs, I supported a new law that says CDL tests must be passed in English. Illegal aliens are ineligible to receive a CDL in Indiana.Cracking down on human trafficking. Indiana’s new law makes it easier for prosecutors to investigate and stop these horrendous crimes. These are common sense reforms that I was proud to support to promote law and order and to keep Hoosiers safe and prosperous. Indiana is doing its job, and I call on the federal government to do the same! |
