Civil Rights Leaders Exhibit Opens Saturday

The Carnegie Museum of Montgomery County is excited to present Civil Rights Leaders. The exhibit opening event is Saturday from 2 p.m. to 4 pm.

The exhibit was written and produced by Wabash College students in The Politics of the Civil Rights Movement class. Each student in the class researched one historical figure and played their role in a January 1965 civil rights strategy meeting simulation. Students then created these displays to share what they learned about the civil rights leaders they studied.

The exhibit will be on display through Feb. 28.

The project was funded by the Restoring Hope, Restoring Trust, a five-year grant Wabash College received as part of a larger initiative available to colleges and universities across Indiana. The five pillars of the grant focus on increasing enrollment at the college, innovating course content to be more inclusive of college and local history, supporting research on black historical sites in the state of Indiana, expanding academic and social support for student success and creating more meaningful and sustained partnerships with Montgomery County non-profits, schools and residents. Community Partnership Mini-grants from RHRT allow local organizations to collaborate with Wabash on creative projects, such as publication fees for a book on the history of Crawfordsvilleā€™s Lincoln School for Colored Children, a summer camp for Montgomery County youth at the Vanity Theater and mental health initiatives.
