South Students Earn Regional Writing Awards

Four Southmont Sr. High School students have been awarded Scholastic Writing Awards, the nation’s longest running and most prestigious recognition program for creative teens, for the Central and Southern Indiana Region. Out of nearly 800 submissions, Southmont claimed seven of these prestigious awards. Judges use specific criteria to evaluate use of personal voice / vision, technical skill and originality. The following students will be recognized at the Visions and Voices Awards Ceremony on Saturday, March 8 at 2 p.m. at the Madame Walker Theatre in Indianapolis.

  • Junior Owen McCutchan: Gold Key – Dramatic Script
  • Junior Tovi Powell: Gold Key – Short Story
  • Senior Johnathan Severe: Honorable Mention – Science Fiction/Fantasy
  • Senior Evelyn Zachary: Gold Key – Poetry, Silver Key – Poetry, Silver Key – Critical Essay, Honorable Mention – Senior Writing Portfolio

Several of these works will be printed in the upcoming First Edition of ArLi, Southmont’s new Art and Literary magazine, which will be available for purchase later this spring.

McCutchan, Powell and Zachary’s Gold Key winners will now move on to national adjudication in New York this March. They will also have their work published in the regional anthology
