Sen. Deery Shares Update

August is always a busy month, and I spent much of the last week making new friends and celebrating and supporting some local organizations.  Here are the highlights.   Celebrating a Local Entrepreneur   On Wednesday, I recognized local small businessowner Bill Ooms. Thirty years ago, Bill started an IT company in his garage.   He now employs more than two dozen employees as the CEO of Business System Solutions and supports other small businesses with their needs. I told Bill we are grateful for his success and that we want him to continue to grow so he can employ more Hoosiers and continue to support our region’s economy.     Raising Funds for Joyful Journey   Last weekend I played in the Joyful Journey, Adult Day Service‘s “Celebrity” softball game to help raise funds for this excellent West Lafayette organization.   It was a great day for a great cause that I hope you will consider supporting. Thanks to everyone who made it to Loeb Stadium or who volunteered in some way.   Beautifying West Lafayette   It was also great to gather with West Lafayette Tree Friends to celebrate the new nursery that will allow the city to continue to invest in street trees in a more efficient way.  Thanks to all the volunteers who plant and care for the trees that line our streets.
Paid Senate Internships Available   One of the best ways for young people to get their foot in the door for a career in government service is through an internship with the General Assembly.     As the home of Purdue University, Senate District 23 has been well represented in the Senate internship program for many years, and I would love to see more of our young people in Indianapolis next spring.   If you know someone of any academic major who is at least a college sophomore, or is a recent college graduate, a graduate student or a law student, please let them know the Indiana Senate Republican Caucus is looking for highly motivated students and young professionals to join our 2026 intern class.   This opportunity allows college students to witness the legislative process in action and to be compensated for doing so. We offer paid spring-semester internships in our communications, information technology, legal, legislative, page and policy offices.

Interns earn a $900 biweekly stipend and benefit from scholarship and academic credit opportunities, professional development, community involvement and networking.    Senate internships are in-person, full-time positions at the Statehouse in downtown Indianapolis that typically begin with a mandatory orientation in late December or early January and conclude at the end of the legislative session, which will be in March 2026.     Interning with the Indiana Senate offers participants more than valuable work experience – it’s a chance for young professionals to become more independent, meet new people and experience Indiana’s capital city. If you know a young person who could benefit from this opportunity, please encourage them to apply.
