James Lee Wilbur

March 7, 1952 – Feb. 26, 2022

James Lee Wilbur of rural Crawfordsville passed away Saturday evening at Franciscan Health Lafayette.  He was 69.

Born March 7, 1952 in Crawfordsville, he was the son of Elmer Wilbur and Sarah J. Rice Wilbur. 

He attended school at Alamo and graduated from Southmont. He was a jack-of-all-trades, working on the family farm, doing construction, building bridges, and many years for the State Highway Department, retiring from there.  He was also a volunteer EMT and fireman for many years in Ripley Township.  He also spent many years working at the Ben Hur Speedway, maintaining the track, and he loved to follow the racing careers of his son and grandson.  He was a member of the Alamo Christian Church, where he had served as a deacon. 

Survivors include his son, Travis (Sheryl) Wilbur; daughter, Bridget Wilbur (Denny Smith); six grandchildren, Levi, Sammi, Tiffany, Wesley, Trey and Sully; brother, John (Karen) Wilbur and their children, Jamie, Jason and Kris; sister, Mary (Danny) Meadows and their children, Suzy, Eddie and Patty; sister, Martha (Charlie) Billings and their children, Chuck, Sam and Peter; sister, Margrette France and her son, Bryan; sister, Lois (Bill) Hepburn with their children, Mallory, Reed, McKenzie, Morgan and Madeline; sister, Fawn (John) Turner with their children, Lindsey, Jessica, Jannett, Jack and James; seven great-grandchildren; several cousins on the Rice side and the Wilbur side.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a great-granddaughter and a nephew, Landon.

Visitation is scheduled from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 8th at Burkhart Funeral Home, 201 W. Wabash Avenue, Crawfordsville. A service is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., led by Pastor Kevin Howey. Cremation will take place after the services.
