Blue Grass FWA gets boost

An accessible fishing pier will be installed at Blue Grass Fish & Wildlife Area (FWA) thanks to a $10,000 donation from the Indiana Natural Resources Foundation (INRF). The Friends of Blue Grass FWA will provide an additional $1,000 for the project and volunteers to help install the pier.Blue Grass

This fishing pier will include features that improve fishing and water-based recreational access for all ages and abilities. The pier will be close to the parking lot with a clear path to it. The gangway will be 39 inches wide, and the dock will be 60 inches wide with no barriers.

The pier will also serve as a courtesy dock for short-term mooring of boats, providing a safer means for launch and removal. It will include a kayak launch as well, helping to reduce traffic on the boat ramps.

As part of the project, which came about after conversations with Blue Grass FWA anglers, staff and volunteers will install underwater fish habitat off the pier to improve bank fishing and create more fishing opportunities from the pier.

“We really appreciate the donation from the INRF and the support from the Friends of Blue Grass FWA,” said Hillary Bulcher, property manager. “The new fishing pier and fish habitat will provide improved and safer recreational opportunities for all visitors at Blue Grass FWA.”

The installation will occur in spring 2022 after the winter waterfowl hunting seasons.
