Thrive West Central Launches Regional Housing Initiative

The U.S. housing market has undergone a radical shift since the beginning of 2020, brought on in part by soaring demand, record low interest rates, and escalating building costs. West Central Indiana is not immune to the current challenges in the housing sector, which is why Thrive West Central recently launched a new Regional Housing Initiative.

The first phase of this effort will entail the development of a regional housing study and action plan covering seven counties of West Central Indiana: Clay, Montgomery, Parke, Putnam, Sullivan, Vermillion, and Vigo.

“In the current economy, talent is everything. For our region to grow and prosper, we must attract and retain a skilled workforce to not only fill the jobs of today, but to create the jobs of the future,” stated Ryan Keller, Executive Director of Thrive West Central. “The availability of housing is an essential element for attracting and retaining talented individuals and families.”

The study aims to develop a clear understanding of the regional housing market and the factors impacting both supply and demand and to analyze key policy, infrastructure, or other constraints on housing. Using these findings, Thrive West Central will work with its partners to identify opportunities and tools for the development of new housing, upgrading of existing housing stock, and increased access and affordability of quality housing.

The Regional Housing Study is expected to be finalized by this fall.

Thrive West Central is an innovative regional driver dedicated to enhancing community assets while improving the overall quality of life in West Central Indiana through problem solving, quality service, and collaborative partnerships.
